Agbon R’Ide of Nigeria Offers Scholarships To Indigent Students In DELSU
The Agbon R’Ide of Nigeria, a sociocultural organization of Agbon indigenes based in the United States of America, has offered scholarships to indigent students of Delta State University, Abraka. The brief but eventful ceremony took place on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at the Prof FMA Ukoli Senior Staff Club, DELSU, Abraka.
In his opening remarks, the coordinator of the scheme, Prof Oghenerhoro Odedede, disclosed that the Association has been awarding scholarships to indigent students of the 7 communities of Agbon Kingdom in DELSU since 2012. “The scheme operates on a rotational basis and it is the turn of the Eku community. Agbon R’Ide considered that the increase in economic hardship will have unbearable consequences on students from disadvantaged family backgrounds.
Odedede, a former Director, Centre of Research and International Programmes assured that Agbon R’Ide will always support and raise these students as they journey to greatness. The selection process was based on outstanding academic performance and indigent status as 12 candidates appeared for screening.
Members of the
Association sponsoring the scholarship scheme according to Odedede are passionate about the human capital development of all Agbon sons and daughters. As a result of this core objective of the association led by the President, Kingsley Okifo and Chairman of the Scholarship Scheme, Chief (Engr) Clement Ojevwe, and other members, decided to sacrificially sponsor the scheme through contributions to promote education of indigent students of the Kingdom.
The two new beneficiaries, Emoefe Arodovwe (Science Education Department, 200 Level, 4.63 CGPA, Eku) and Tobor Godswill (Department of Physiology, 200 Level, 3.90 CGPA, Eku) received cheques of N150,000 each while the existing beneficiaries, Omovie Martins Okiemute (Business Administration, 300 level, Kokori-Inland), Akpobome Ruth (Microbiology, 300 level, Kokori-Inland), Ejagede Onosakponome (Human Kinetics, 400 level, Okpara-Inland), Agofure Rita Ovigue (SLT Biochemistry, 500 level, Isiokolo) and Umurhurhu Oghenegare (Chemistry Education, 400 level, Okpara-Waterside), Peter OgheneKparobo (Medical Biochemistry) got cheques of N75, 000 each.
Present at the event are Profs Oghenerhoro Odedede, Festus Arunaye, F.C. Ugbe, Drs Monday Ogbomo, Odede Israel Emmanuel Emama Mr. Ovocity Eghworo the beneficiaries and their parents.
